Gender Patterns in Family Words

Spanish family words follow a clear gender pattern. Most words for male family members end in -o and female in -a: hermano/hermana, abuelo/abuela, tío/tía, primo/prima. When talking about a mixed group, use the masculine plural: mis abuelos = my grandparents (or grandpa and grandma), mis padres = my parents, mis hermanos = my siblings. The word los padres means "parents" (not just "fathers").
