When to Use Ser

Ser is used for permanent or inherent characteristics. This includes identity (Soy María – I am María), nationality (Somos americanos – We are American), professions (Ella es doctora – She is a doctor), physical descriptions that are inherent (El edificio es alto – The building is tall), time and dates (Son las tres – It's three o'clock), and relationships (Es mi hermano – He is my brother). A helpful mnemonic is DOCTOR: Description, Occupation, Characteristic, Time, Origin, Relationship.
